The city is also called <i>Mokum<\/i>\u00a0&#8211; which is the Yiddish word for \u2018city\u2019. Situated in the province of North Holland on the Amstel River and \u2018t IJ, the name Amsterdam was given to the city in the 13th century when a dam was built on the Amstel. Currently, about 920.000 people live in the city. It is a community with 180 different nationalities, which makes it the most diverse city in the world.<\/p>\n<h2>What makes Amsterdam unique?<\/h2>\n<p>What makes Amsterdam unique is the combination of its beauty and its people. The mentality of the people of Amsterdam, with their commercial spirit and proverbial tolerance, has had a decisive influence on the history of the city. Another major attraction of the city is its <b>architecture<\/b>. The tall, narrow houses with their pretty gables rest beside picture\u2013perfect tree-lined houses. Be sure to check out this address: Oude Hoogstraat number 22. Only 2.02 meters wide, it\u2019s the <b>narrowest house in the world<\/b>. Don\u2019t forget to visit the <b>Vondelpark<\/b>: With over 10 million tourists every year, you won\u2019t be the only one enjoying this beautiful public park.<\/p>\n<p>Then there are the numerous <a href=\"https:\/\/amsterdamspotted.com\/top-coffeeshops-amsterdam\/\"><em><strong>coffeeshops<\/strong><\/em><\/a> and adorable restaurants, bars and shops.
