Every 4 May, during the National Commemoration, we remember the victims of the Second World War, as well as those of later wars and peace missions. At 20.00 hours, there is a two-minute silence throughout the Netherlands.<\/p>\n
The National Commemoration takes place at the National Monument on Dam Square in Amsterdam. The king and queen lay a wreath on behalf of the entire Dutch population, while children and grandchildren lay wreaths for different groups of war victims in memory of the survivors. Prior to the ceremony on Dam Square, a memorial service is held in the Nieuwe Kerk.<\/p>\n

The war memorial on Dam Square in Amsterdam was unveiled in 1956. Since 1961, the National Remembrance Day has been held at this location. It was not until 1988 that the time was set for 20:00 in the evening; before that it was at 16:00 in the afternoon.<\/p>\n
