This is perhaps the most peaceful part of <a href=\"https:\/\/amsterdamspotted.com\/amsterdam-spotted-the-ultimate-city-guide\/\"><em><strong>Amsterdam<\/strong><\/em><\/a>. The three islands \u2013 <b><a href=\"https:\/\/maps.app.goo.gl\/3YTPXGdTaQJswkcJ9\">Realeneiland<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/maps.app.goo.gl\/iS9BfC4kuxkJ9nyy6\">Bickerseiland <\/a><\/b>and<a href=\"https:\/\/maps.app.goo.gl\/dzu7LpccYtKiRDro6\"><b> Prinseneiland<\/b><\/a> \u2013 are artificial islands that were originally constructed in the 17th century (between 1611\/1615), at the same time as the <a href=\"https:\/\/amsterdamspotted.com\/history-canals-amsterdam\/\"><em><strong>Canal Ring<\/strong><\/em><\/a>, to house shipyards. Unlike the Eastern Islands of Amsterdam (Oostelijke Eilanden), the Western Islands had nothing to do with the trade from the Dutch East Indies. The names of the streets on the islands are reminders of these goods. Until the end of the 19th century this was an area with many wharfs, little industries and warehouses, related to the shipping trades.<\/p>\n<p>After the Second World War the desolated area was discovered by many artists, who established their homes and studios in the vacant buildings. Nowadays the district is a world unto itself, cut through with canals and linked with small drawbridges. It\u2019s home to charming homes and artists\u2019 studios even today. The islands can be easily reached from Haarlemmerdijk; pass beneath the railway viaduct, and you are standing along the modern harbour basin.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Tip<\/strong>: Have you already visited the Western Islands?
