His Majesty King Willem Alexander presented the 2025 Royal Award for Modern Painting on Friday 31 January at the Royal Palace in Amsterdam. After honouring the three winners, the King opened the exhibition, which displays the works of both the winners and the other nominees. The exhibition in the Royal Palace Amsterdam offers the chance to discover the future of Dutch painting. From abstract to realistic, from socially engaged to personal, this selection reflects the rich diversity of the medium of painting.
The award was established in 1871 by King Willem III as the Royal Grant for Painting. After King Willem III, Queen Emma, Queen Wilhelmina, Queen Juliana and Queen Beatrix developed this incentive award into a tradition of royal attention for the art of painting. King Willem-Alexander has continued this tradition since 2013.
